Can berries prevent illness?

Updated: Dec 20, 2022

Not sure if you noticed, but most of the smoothies I've posted on A Thoughtful Plate's Facebook Page have berries swirling around inside! There's a fascinating reason for my healthy obsession, other than the beautiful colors.

I've discovered through research that these beautiful colored berries are packed full of cell repairing, disease-fighting power called antioxidants. Colors in fruits and veggies are a good indicator they're antioxidant and nutrient rich.

Antioxidants, which are in many of the fruits and veggies we eat may help fight the unbalancing act of free radicals.

Free radicals are formed when your body breaks down food or when you're exposed to tobacco smoke, radiation, and other harmful elements in the air. Free radicals can cause many diseases and chronic illnesses; heart disease, cancer and many others.

There is something you can to alter the effects of free radicals—your lifestyle! Starting with what you eat!

When you drink a smoothie packed with berries or eat vegetables, which most contain powerful antioxidants, these super foods stop free radicals before they form—breaking them down before they become harmful.

Try a smoothie with blueberries, strawberries or any berry. Also, try adding more dark-colored veggies to your plate. Either way, consuming foods rich in antioxidants can help prevent chronic illness and help you live a longer and healthier quality of life.
