Influenza (flu) season is almost behind us, or is it? With spring heading our way, we begin to daydream of long, lazy summer days, vacations, and some well-needed R&R. We're still not out of the woods yet, says the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC reports flu season begins October and can last well into May, (cdc.gov.)
And although COVID vaccinations are available and fewer cases are reported, there is still the spread of the virus, the "common cold," and virus symptoms to address. I decided to fight back after getting the flu. My mission, to try a natural remedy!
I woke up with a severe sore throat that became worse each day. A stuffy nose, headache, body chills, and fever followed. My husband Chef_Moevito knocked on our bedroom door with a cup of tea in hand. Bright, yellow wedges of lemon floated around in never-ending circles. I could smell the familiar aroma of ginger, and as I stirred the spoon to inspect its contents, sticky brown honey clung to my spoon. I was not impressed at all.
Grandma Marie, Moe's Grandmother, inspired this healing tonic swirling around in my favorite mug.
While I drank the tonic, Moe spoke fondly of his grandma and how everything she touched seemed to turn out perfect, especially in the kitchen! Grandma Marie, like most grandmothers, lived in their kitchen, creating fantastic meals and forcing us to consume foreign cups of liquid when ill.
"Trust me," he said. My husband had the most reassuring tone and gestured toward the cup of tea he held. At this point, I felt so sick I probably would have drank anything.
I was convinced. I drank the entire cup and was sure to chew the lemon peels quickly. In about an hour or so, I felt better. Better as in, I can get up and go on with my day, kind of better.
Was I miraculously cured? No. However, the benefits that of honey, lemon, and ginger have healing properties and gave me the boost I needed to recover quickly.
God has given us access to countless plants, herbs, fruits & grains that prevent dis-ease and cure chronic illnesses. The medicinal benefits of these and many other plant-rich foods have been backed by studies, vetted through research, and proven by clinical trials.
Whether you decide to consume these power three—honey, lemon & ginger together or individually—the health benefits are numerous.
